Ch.m. The Lieutenant-Esken Lady by Eskendereya (February 21,2020) in NY
Forces Sweetheart ‘Bella’ has lived here before she even knew it. Her mother, Esken Lady, was here when she was in foal with her. Sweetheart was our first foal out of Lady. She was given the barn name ‘Bella’ after Cristyn’s daughter named Isabella.
As a weanling, Sweetheart truly lived up to her name as she was genuinely a sweetheart. She loved, and still does, resting her head on
your shoulder and nuzzling her nose into your face. She did not get the memo that she was a chestnut mare.
For her racing career, she was a NY bred, ran under Westwood Thoroughbreds & Make A Run Stable. Her first time out at GulfStream park in south Florida on November 5th, 2022, she got 1st place. Sweetheart ran in the Stallion Series at Aqueduct in NY in December 2022. She then, first experienced mud in her face. She was not a fan. I mean what distinguished lady does?
On March 23, 2023 she ran again at GulfStream park and got 1st place. Another win picture for dad!
As the year went on, our trainer found she had a strange fracture in her knee. She came home to RI for some rest & relaxation to heal.
Our lovely vets at Ocean State Equine Associates did a full lameness exam and x-rays. There was in fact an injury.
As time went on, Sweetheart was healing nicely.
Mom fell in love and did not want her to go back to racing.
Sweetheart now lives in a paddock on the property with her friend, Ed.
24/7 of beautiful pasture to graze and run at her leisure.
Because of her, we started Welcome Pastures. A thoroughbred aftercare sanctuary for horses just like her!
Help us help more horses like Sweetheart!
Handsome Old Man
Ed’s true name is unknown to us. A caring friend took Ed from his original home for better care. His original home had many horses that wouldn’t allow Ed to eat and was pushed aside. He was very skinny and his fur was overgrown. He was extra fluffy due to never being blanketed. His feet were also in terrible condition.
One week in the early Spring of 2024, our other horse Sweetheart went to our friend’s farm while we were away. She became extremely attached to Ed.
Ed would lay down and Sweetheart would stand guard before him while he rested. It was truly a heartfelt sight to see. When we returned from our trip, we could not separate these two as they became buddies. With a bit of shock and concern by his sight at first, and after a little hesitation as well, we said okay! (I’m glad we did.)
In the months' Ed has been here living outside with Sweetheart, he is a new horse.. He shed his coat. With unlimited green grass to graze upon alongside his shadow (Sweetheart) who never leaves his side. Our wonderful farrier has gotten his hooves straightened out and stronger.
Look what love can do!!
Our handsome old man is very happy now. The name Ed suits him as its simplicity shows how simply perfect he is.
Even though our organization is mainly focused on thoroughbred aftercare, Ed is essential in our thoroughbred Sweetheart’s care as he is her buddy. He is her heart horse. I am so happy that we provide a loving space for them. We hope to be able to provide more loving spaces for others in need.
